General Information: Chief business and financial officer. Manage the UW’s facilities, finance, investments, accounting, risk management, and audit services, providing leadership to staff of 1500. Oversee the preparation of the annual financial statements and reports to funding agencies and donors. Assist in long-range planning for facilities and financial affairs. Oversee coordinated audit and risk management processes, making recommendations on policies and practices. Report to President and Board of Regents.
Key Accomplishments:
- Reorganized Finance and Facilities and created Strategy Maps, identified initiatives and developed metrics to track progress
- Created Office of Strategy Management to provide support for quality and process improvement; organization, leadership and staff development, metrics development and monitoring, and strategic projects
- Created Internal Lending Program for campus
- Developed enhanced services and information for Global Operations Support
- Provided leadership for the UW Tower relocation through coordination of campus service providers, contractors, movers and the clients
- Provided leadership in working with Sound Transit and related transportation issues
- Created University-wide central offices for Sustainability and Business Diversity
- Provided leadership for the several Data Management Committees and the Collaborative Tools Strategic Taskforce which led recommendations for enhancing University collaboration across academic, research, healthcare and administrative areas.

- Created a customer-focused, dynamic financial organization with strong commitment to change, driven by metrics (balanced scorecard), fueled by diversity, open communications, risk-taking, and a passion for being the best
- Use of quality improvement and reengineering tools resulted in productivity increases of more than 100%.
- Built a corporate treasury function, and moved the endowment performance from bottom to top quartile.
- Co-led Presidential Initiative on compliance and enterprise risk management with Dean for Arts and Sciences.

Vice President and Manager, Asset Liability Division
1985 to 1987
- Created the Asset Liability Division for a $2.4 billion bank holding company, providing staff support to senior management and the Board.
- Recommended goals and strategies for earnings stability and growth, interest rate and liquidity risk, loan and deposit pricing, and balance sheet hedging. Introduced an earnings simulation model to measure the effect of decisions on future earnings.
- Developed interest rate swap strategy to support aggressive loan pricing. Supervised three professionals.
- Reported to the Vice-Chairman and Chief Financial Officer.
Seafirst Corporation, Seattle, WA
Vice President and Manager, Asset Liability Department
1980 to 1985
- Managed the Asset Liability Department of a $10 billion financial institution.
- Recommended balance sheet goals and strategies to senior management, including rate sensitivity, liquidity, funding and equity.
- Supervised 6 finance professionals. Reported to the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
