The UW Climate Action Plan has been submitted! In January 2009, as part of President Emmert’s leadership in signing the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), an Oversight Team formed under the auspices of the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee. The Team was tasked with coordinating the drafting of the university’s Climate Action Plan, an institutional plan toward becoming climate neutral. Teams of faculty, students, administrative leaders and staff across all three campuses worked together to develop the plan, which was submitted to ACUPCC on September 12, 2009. Stay tuned as the teams now turn their attention to implementation strategies, and for information on how to get involved.
The Plan may be viewed here.

The CFL Exchange Project, to be conducted in April, will exchange all incandescent light bulbs on Seattle campus with energy savings CFL bulbs. The task is being led by UW senior Chris Bruno, with help from many student volunteers. This exciting venture builds on a similar successful project recently done in the University’s residence halls and Greek system houses. The completion of this project will not only reduce UW’s carbon footprint, but is also estimated to reduce our utility costs by approximately $12,000 a year.

In Fall 2008, the University of Washington launched a new UW Environmental Innovation Challenge (EIC) in which interdisciplinary student teams work collaboratively to develop solutions to a specific problem of environmental significance. The EIC will spark new product designs that capitalize on emerging market conditions and propose business concepts that promise significant financial reward while enhancing environmental sustainability.
For the EIC, student teams (frequently in partnership with companies, government agencies, etc) will work to develop pioneering methods, designs, and products that provide innovative solutions, reduce environmental impacts, improve ecological sustainability, and improve environmental quality while promoting viable business concepts. Each student team will develop a proof-of-concept, prototype or simulation, as well as a 5- to 7-page business summary that demonstrates well-formulated business models with significant potential for growth.
