Mail Delivery and Pickup Information

Mail Delivery Times

Routes are arranged by location and anticipated load for efficiency. Delivery/Collection times are posted at each location. Depending on traffic, unusual mail volume, or other unforseen delays, Mailing Services staff may arrive later than the posted time but should not arrive prior to the posted time.

Campus MailI
Campus mail and mail from the outlying medical centers is generally picked up, sorted, and delivered witihin 24 hours or less.

Mailing Services provides special late-afternoon collection boxes for deposit of urgent campus and unstamped off-campus mail generated after the last regular pick-up. Mail is collected from these late-afternoon boxes Monday through Friday (except UW holidays) at times posted on the mailboxes, at the following locations:

Mail collected from these boxes is sorted and delivered the next University business day. First class mail collected from these boxes is processed and metered the day of deposit. To prepare mail for collection from these boxes, use budget number barcode labels. Do not place stamped mail in these boxes; stamped mail will delay the processing of all the mail.

Mail from these boxes does not reach Mailing Services in time for same day processing of special service mail (including USPSI certified, insured, registered, and express mail; UPS, Airborne Express, DHL Worldwide Express, Federal Express.)

United States Postal Service Mail
Incoming USPS Special Services mail is delivered in 24 hours or less. Note: USPS Express mail is not delivered directly by USPS but comes to Mailing Services for processing and delivery.

For direct delivery and for delivery to residence halls, particularly on weekends, Mailing Services recommends that correspondents be advised to send critical items by another overnight carrier such as UPS, or Federal Express.

Private Carriers
Items arriving by private overnight and package carriers such as Federal Express and United ParcelI Service are delivered directly when a complete delivery address (including building and room number) has been provided. Insufficient address information may cause items to be misdelivered, delayed, or returned to the sender by the carrier.

Mailing Services provides daily mail delivery free of charge to Olympia for letters and packages addressed to zipI code 98504 to box numbers in the 4 series (example: 45407). The Olympia courier from our sister organization Consolidated Mail Services is picked up daily between 12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m., all items addressed to zip code 98504 with a 4 series box number that misses the daily pick-up will be picked up the following day. You are still able to send items to Olympia using accountable mailI services like Registered, Certified Return ReceiptI, Insured or Express Mail.


New Mail Pickup, Delivery Service or Change to Existing Service

Requests for new service or for changes in level of service are handled when they are received; existing levels are reviewed periodically. Mailing Services is responsible for determining the appropriate level of service on a case-by-case basis.

Mail Pickup and Delivery Service Outside Normal Service Zones

Mailing Services provides service to departments on the central, south, east and west campus, and to most outlying campus addresses. Requests for mail pickup and delivery outside the normal service zones are reviewed by Mailing Services on an individual basis. Mailing Services pickup and delivery may be available for a charge, depending on building location, mail volume or number of departments. In some cases, service may need to be provided solely by the United State Postal Service (USPS). Contact Mailing Services with questions concerning mail delivery and collection.
