University of Washington Sustainability Pledge

Take the pledge!

The University of Washington has established a commitment to environmental stewardship, setting the bar well above merely complying with laws and standards. The University is committed to being a positive force for enhancement of the environment, not just in research and education but in how it manages facilities and resources.

We invite you to take a pledge towards this goal while on campus by saving energy, promoting sustainable food, conserving water, protecting green space, increasing recycling, and reducing reliance on polluting modes of transportation.

A special thanks to our colleagues at Emory University for inspiring us with their pledge.

Saving Energy

Reducing your electricity use by changing your behavior reduces your environmental footprint and, when on campus, helps UW achieve our Climate Action Plan goals.

I will set sleep mode on my computer and turn off my PC, monitor, printer and copier at the end of the day. If I am unable to switch off the entire computer, I will turn off the monitor and my desktop printer.

I will turn off my monitor if I plan to be away from my desk for more than one hour, especially when I go to lunch, class or a meeting.

I will turn off the lights when I leave any room, bathrooms, meeting rooms for more than five minutes.

I will choose ENERGY STAR rated lamps and other fixtures, as well as replace the incandescent bulbs in my fixtures with compact fluorescent bulbs.

I will lower blinds in the summer to keep my space cool and raise blinds in the winter to let in the sun's warmth and use natural light (lowering them at the end of the day to trap the heat at night).

When I work or study late, I will use only the lighting I need to illuminate work areas.

I will disable my screensaver, as it prevents the computer from going into sleep mode which means that it is, in fact, wasting energy.

I will take the stairs instead of using elevators whenever possible.

I will unplug equipment that uses standby energy such as computers, coffee makers, refrigerators, alarm clocks, and stereos when I plan to be away for long periods of time, such as going away for vacation or heading home during break.

If I work in a research building, I will lower the sash on my fume hood as low as possible when in use, and I will close the sash on my fume hood when not in use.

I will wash my clothes in the cold water cycle, which saves energy by not heating water.
