Soaring energy consumption by ever more powerful computers, data centers and mobile devices has many experts looking to reduce the energy use of these devices. Most projects so far focus on more efficient cooling systems or energy-saving power modes.
A small group of UW students stood in an open field Sunday morning, munching on granola and fresh fruit as they anticipated the groundbreaking of the new UW Farm.
As of yesterday, that wait is officially over. The UW Farm, a registered student organization that grows produce, has expanded to include a new location near the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH) on the east side of campus.
In alignment with UW’s 2Y2D strategic direction, Student Fiscal Services is making a major commitment to sustainable business practices by eliminating paper reports produced by the Student Database (SDB).
Working in conjunction with UWIT and our process partners, we have already converted many reports to PDF format and have stored them on a network drive. This has drastically reduced the number of daily SDB reports being printed – saving a substantial number of trees in the process.
The Science and Policy Summit, sponsored by the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, will be held on Friday, May 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the UW Tower. The summit aims to open a dialogue between scientists and policy makers.

That’s the thinking behind the UW Tower Green Fair, to be held in the Tower cafeteria from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19. The event is being presented by the UW Tower Green Team — the same folks behind the Tower Patio Demonstration Garden and other environmentally-friendly efforts.

Theo chocolate from Fremont, Coca-Cola bottles in Bellevue and tofu made on Whidbey Island: UW Housing and Food Services (HFS) is looking to become greener by striving for 100 percent sustainability for their campus products by purchasing from local vendors.
The UW will become a base for one of the nation's four new Clean Air Research Centers funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The agency announced the funding of the centers March 7. Each center will receive approximately $8 million over five years.
The centers will study the health impact of the complex, varying mixtures of particles, vapors and gas that pollute the air.
NBIS and Salmon Safe have been working together to engage businesses and large-scale urban landowners in addressing critical issues that impact our urban salmon runs in Puget Sound. The Salmon-Safe celebration held on February 24th, hosted by the University of Washington, Salmon-Safe and the Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability (NBIS) honored five outstanding urban properties in the Puget Sound region. About 100 attendees were there to enjoy the event with wonderful food from PCC and of course, salmon-safe wines provided by Terra Blanca.
The UW’s Seattle campus has just become the largest institution in the state to be certified as salmon-safe.
The certification, which was created by the Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability (NBIS), recognizes the UW’s efforts to protect water quality and salmon habitat. In addition, the UW had to agree to further reduce its environmental impact over the coming five years.
Trash-In 2011 will take place on April 13 at the Bryants Building Annex. Recycling & Solid Waste will receive one day’s worth of trash from eight designated campus buildings and sort it into categories currently collected on campus.
