Students at the University of Washington have teamed up on a startup that promises to turn slash piles of forest refuse into biochar, a crumbly charcoal-like product for farmers that helps their soil hold water and nutrients. Biochar is not technically a fertilizer, but often improves yield for farmers.
How green is your office?
Now there’s a way to find out and even quantify your office’s efforts at environmental responsibility. The Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (ESS) office, housed within Finance & Facilities has created a Green Office Certification Program which consists of an informal audit of office practices, accomplished through a short survey.
A few UW trucks may soon be leaving an aromatic trail of french fries and fried chicken in their wake if a few sustainably minded students get their way.
The Biodiesel Cooperative, led by a group of engineering students, is looking to convert a few thousand gallons of wasted cooking oil into biodiesel that could be used on campus in place of traditional fuel.
We've scratched the surface of Sierra magazine's Cool Schools list on Treehugger before, but this time I've decided to dig into one of the schools so we can learn more about what makes it so green.
The University of Washington (UW) topped the list this year, and Aubrey Batchelor, Program Coordinator in UW's Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability office, said green programs and projects are commonplace at UW.
For the last three years a group of students has been volunteering to make a small corner of campus more attractive. They’re a student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration, and their mission is to clear out invasive plants and replace them with native ones.
The group has been working in a small wooded area across from McCarty Hall, where a path leads from the residence halls to the tennis courts and ivy and blackberries grow rampant.
The UW has banned it, but the stuff worms its way onto campus packed in boxes. It’s ubiquitous Styrofoam (the common name for foamed polystyrene), which has permeated the world as a low-cost, lightweight material with a wide array of uses. But the material is toxic and it never goes away.
That's why UW Recycling started a Styrofoam recycling program a year ago that is now being expanded.

Sierra Magazine, the official publication of the Sierra Club, has named the University of Washington the top university in the country for its initiatives to operate sustainably and limit its contributions to global warming. This is the fourth year the UW has been among the top-ranked schools; it was fourth last year
Just a few reasons why UW leads the pack: Every building completed since 2006 has earned LEED Gold. All appliances bought are Energy Star rated. And the hydropowered campus runs three farms, an extensive recycling program, and the conservation-research hotbed Pack Forest. Above, from left, students Rachel Malinen, Brady Ryan, and Elizabeth Wheat tend to their cabbage crop. Score: 81.2
How is the UW doing in fulfilling its pledges to be environmentally responsible and to make the University a more sustainable enterprise? The answer is now available at the new “sustainability dashboard.”
Think there are a lot of bicycles around campus? Well, you’re right. According to Transportation Services, 8 percent of all students, 6 percent of staff, and 13 percent of faculty commute trips are made by bicycle. On any given day, it’s estimated that approximately 4,500 students, staff and faculty bike to campus.
...The UW received a silver designation from the league....

Faced with reduced support staff last fall, the School of Social Work faculty took control of their own course Web site content. By leveraging UW-hosted Catalyst CommonView, and with a little help from UW-IT for customized training sessions, faculty created their own online course materials for 61 classes. Learn how the School and its two-person IT team created this successful model of sustainable course support in this Profile of Technology Use.
A new "utility dashboard" at UW Bothell tracks campus use of energy in real time. It's part of environmentally friendly campus improvements resulting from a campuswide evaluation of energy usage. Tony Guerrero, UWB vice chancellor for facilities, said energy improvements at Bothell equal removing 123 cars from the road every year. Here, Bothell students Edith Chan, left, and Marlene Manzo check the readouts.

The UW expects to reduce energy consumption and save about $700,000 in energy costs during its participation in the Department of Energy’s $178 million Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project. Now in the second year of the five-year project, the UW is installing “intelligent” electrical meters, water meters, and lighting controls in most UW Seattle buildings. To ensure reliable and secure communications, the UW Capital Projects Office and Facilities Services are partnering with UW-IT to provide an isolated, secure Facilities Network for the grid.
